Research is concerned mainly with the medieval Church, and publications focus on the papacy of the 11th and 12th centuries. He has written on papal councils and papal letters of this period, especially their dissemination and survival, and on the canonical sources of high medieval papal ideology. Present research includes the preparation of a critical edition of the acts of Pope urban II's Council of Piacenza (1095), and investigating the influence of specific canon law books on papal correspondence.
