Research focuses on contract law theory, and the law and economics of contracts and commercial law. He has been one of the central figures in developing the conceptual foundations of law and economics. His work, which comprises four books and more than three dozen scholarly articles, extends into other behavioral sciences, including recently the relationship between law and social norms. In addition, he has served as Dean at Virginia for the past decade.
