Andrew M. and Jane M. Bursky Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Immunology, Professor of Molecular Microbiology. Researcher in the fields of cytokine biology and tumor immunology. Elucidated structure of interferon-gamma receptor, identified critical signaling sequences, and determined how STAT proteins associate with cytokine receptors. Demonstrated that immunity protects against spontaneous and carcinogen-induced tumor development. Established validity of contested cancer immunosurveillance theory, broadening it to include concept of cancer immunoediting. Proved that some cancers were kept under long-term control by immunity in an equilibrium state. Honors include the Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Prize for Cancer Research (2007).
