The principal subject of his research and writing is the third volume of his projected trilogy on Stalin and his time. The first volume, Stalin as Revolutionary , dealt with Stalin's rise to power by 1929, and the second volume, Stalin in Power , focused attention on the Stalinist 1930s. The third volume covers the war years and postwar years of Stalin's Cold War against the West.
