Robert C. Armstrong has shown transformative leadership in research, education, and service to MIT, the profession, and the Nation. In research, he established himself as a leader in polymer rheology through a number of highly influential papers on the experiments and simulations of polymer dynamics. As Department Head, he led the first fundamental rethinking of the chemical engineering curriculum in over 40 years. With his leadership, MIT’s Energy Initiative at its ten year anniversary could point to impressive accomplishments including $600 million for research, 900+ research projects, 90 collaborating organizations, 300+participating faculty members, and 315 graduate student fellowships.
