Hinde's research has been concerned with bird behavior (especially the integration of nest-building behavior in canaries); the behavior of non-human primates; and interpersonal relationships (especially those within human families). Since he retired he has written books on the nature of human relationships; on a Darwinian approach to the problem of why all human cultures have some sort of religious system, and on the bases of moral systems.
