Richard Lariviere served as President and CEO of the Field Museum from 2012 - 2020. His career in academia and business is grounded in his expertise on India, where he was an early pioneer in encouraging American companies to invest in the Information Technology industry.  

An expert on the Indian legal system, fluent in French, Hindi, and Sanskrit. He was a professor and Dean of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, where he won international book prizes and teaching awards. He was Provost and Executive Vice-Chancellor at the University of Kansas, and president of the University of Oregon.


Former Chairman of the Board of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, member of the Advisory Board of After School Matters, Board of Directors, Hospital Authority Board University of Kansas Hospital, Chairman of the Board of Kansas Center for Technology Commercialization, Board of Directors Hong Kong American Center, U.S. Delegate to the Union Académique Internationale. In Chicago he is a member of the Economic Club, the Chicago Club, and the Commercial Club.


He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Iowa and has his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain, a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a Fellow of the American Oriental Society.
