Shine's studies on life history, demography, predator-prey relationships, and reproductive biology of snakes have led to many new discoveries, including new generalizations (e.g., territoriality associated with food resources, previously unknown in snakes). He has focused on major issues in conservation - especially the biology, impact and control of invasive species. Profound accomplishments are associated with his studies of the aggressively invasive cane toad in Australia. He documented intense selection favoring rapidly migrating individuals and his studies have led to new general models of evolution. Shine has worked extensively on evolutionary transitions in life-history traits and on sexually-selected traits.
