Rexhep Ismajli

Professor Rexhep Ismajli, Professor of General Linguistics and History of Albanian at the University of Prishtina in Kosovo since 1994 and a Regular Member of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts, where he served as President, 2002-2008, is the foremost scholar of the Albanian language, the least well-understood and least explored branch within the Indo-European language family. He has approached Albanian from synchronic and diachronic perspectives, insightfully treating both the earliest attested Albanian material and modern dialect evidence. He has written extensively also on the development of Albanian studies, thus contributing additionally to the history of linguistics in Europe.
