Rexford Ahima, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Diabetes at the Johns Hopkins University. He received a BSc from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, MD from the University of Ghana, and PhD from Tulane University. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Jacobi and Weiler Hospitals at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and clinical and research fellowships in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ahima’s research interests are in the mechanisms of energy homeostasis, and glucose and lipid metabolism, particularly the signaling of adipokines, cytokines and myokines, and their roles in pathogenesis and treatment of obesity and diabetes. Dr. Ahima is currently editor of the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences Year in Diabetes and Obesity, and former editor-in-chief of Journal of Clinical Investigation. He serves on the Endocrine Society Board of Directors.
