Traister serves as a writer-at-large at New York magazine and The Cut, and she is a contributing editor at Elle magazine. She has covered women in politics, media and entertainment for over a decade, and received critical acclaim for her book Big Girls Don't Cry (2010) a New York Times Notable Book of 2010 and winner of the Ernesta Drinker Ballard Book Prize.. Traister was a senior editor at the New Republic, and worked as a senior writer at Salon from 2003 to 2010. Traister's work is notable for its sharply intelligent analysis of feminism and its evolution in politics, media, entertainment, and society at large.
