Original research on the fundamental physics of climate, including dynamics, radiative transfer and the water-vapor feedback, which he applies broadly to understand planetary atmospheres, and Earth's past-time (especially Snowball Earth), present-day and future climate, with special focus on human-caused changes. Wrote the defining book Principles of Planetary Climate (2010), co-produced The Warming Papers explaining the history of the physics of climate bearing on society, is a major contributor to science reports for US and intergovernmental agencies, and contributes widely read materials and perspectives through informal channels including the blog he cofounded, Realclimate.
