Hexter has been Dean of Arts & Humanities and Executive Dean of Letters & Science at UC Berkeley (1998-2005), President of Hampshire College (2005-2010), Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor at UC Davis (2011-2020), where he also served as Acting and then Interim Chancellor (March 2016 through July 2017). At Hampshire he led the creation of the Anti-Racism Administrative Action Plan and established an ombuds office. At Davis he launched a speakers’ series on the future of the public university and led the 2020 Initiative, involving significant growth, as well as supporting greater diversity and inclusion for faculty, students and staff. Hexter is a founding member of LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education. He continues to research, teach and publish on the reception of the Greco-Roman classics and on Medieval Latin literature.
