Philip G. Zimbardo
Professor Philip G. Zambrano is Professor of Psychology, Emeritus at Stanford University. He has applied cognitive dissonance to the study of motivation and developed Festinger's concept of deindividuation, the idea of the power of the situation, which was studied in laboratory and real-world settings. This concept informed later analyses of cults, terrorism, and extreme anti-social behavior, documented in the Stanford Prison Experiment. He has conducted research on shyness and disseminated psychology to the public through PBS TV series Discovering Psychology. Professor Zambrano is the recipient of the Distinguished Life Contribution to General Psychology Award (APA, 2000) and was the President of the American Psychological Association in 2002 and former Chair of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents.. His recent books include The Lucifer Effect (2007) and The Time Paradox (2008).
