Peter Howley is the Shattuck Professor of Pathological Anatomy at Harvard Medical School.  After 20 years as an intramural scientist at the National Institutes of Health, he moved to Harvard Medical School as the Chairman of Pathology, a position he held until 2011.  He is currently a professor in the Department of Immunology as well as the Department of Pathology.  His research involves the molecular biology of the papillomaviruses with a particular focus on the mechanisms by which the human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause cancer.  Currently his laboratory is exploring interactions between the virus and the host that may afford the opportunity for the development of specific anti-HPV therapeutics.
