A Fellow of the British Academy, Warren is a scholar of Aegean civilization, particularly Minoan Crete. He has excavated sites at Knossos, Myrtos and Debla in Crete, and published a many studies on Aegean civilization, from chronology to pottery typologies to Mediterranean and Near Eastern trade. He was  Professor of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at Bristol University from 1977 to 2001, and in 2010 was honored with a Festschrift published by the British School at Athens. His 1989 book Aegean Bronze Age Chronology (with Vronwy Hankey as a co-author) focused on the relative and absolute chronologies of the Aegean region, in particular through links to ancient Egypt.
