Peter A. Jones

Jones is renowned for his studies on the molecular biology of cancer and basic mechanisms of DNA methylation. He played a role in the emergence of the field of epigenetics and was among the first to link DNA methylation, differentiation, and gene expression. His determination that the drug 5-azacytidine induces changes in gene expression and inhibits DNA methylation led to FDA approval for use in the treatment of the myelodysplastic syndromes. Jones' work with Steve Baylin, revealing that there is an epigenetic component in cancer causation and malignant cell growth, has made substantial impact in cancer diagnosis and treatment strategies.
