Professor of Biological Chemistry and Medicine. Discovered the prototype of a family of proteins called aquaporins, which function as water channels in the membranes of animal and plant cells. Led efforts to find new family members and to elucidate the structure, distribution, physiology, and pathophysiology of the aquaporins. Recipient of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2003.
