Pioneered the use of electron microscopy as a tool for materials research. Was the first to see line defects (dislocations) and their motion in the transmission electron microscope. Interpreted observations of dislocations and other defects in crystalline solids; related these observations to dislocations' preeminent role in determining mechanical properties.
