Novelist; Travel Writer. Unique and versatile writer of fiction and travel literature. Theroux is considered by many to be among the best of living American, or even English language, practitioners of the great nineteenth-century British tradition of travel writing with such early books as The Great Railway Bazaar (1975) The Old Patagonian Express (1979) and The Kingdom By The Sea (1983) and more recent titles like Dark Star Safari (2002) and Ghost Train To The Eastern Star (2008). His chameleon novels, like The Mosquito Coast (1981) The Family Arsenal (1976), Picture Palace (1978), extend this adventurously worldwide exploration of human character and the planet where we live. Fellow, Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society of Literature. Recipient, American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters award for literature, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The Mosquito Coast, the Whitbread Prize for Picture Palace, The Thomas Cook Travel Book Award for Riding the Iron Rooster, as well as honorary doctorates from Trinity College, Washington, D.C., and Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts.
