Leader in psychology of risk analysis and assessment, major researcher in behavioral economics, developed the affect heuristic describing how positive and negative feelings drive judgments and decisions, elaborated phenomenon of psychic numbing (the failure to respond proportionally to major tragedies). He has published widely in the scientific literature as well as in more general venues that inform and affect policy and community. Serves on many national and international committees concerned with risk, decision making, and human welfare. His prolific research has direct implications for policy; for this reason and because of his considered judgment, policy organizations seek his advice.
