Research concerned with enzymes, with emphasis on isotope exchange techniques, kinetics, and chemical properties. His group discovered the phosphorylation of histidine residues in enzymes. They developed the binding change mechanism for ATP synthase. This included the novel features of energy use not primarily for the formation but for the release of ATP, a required sequential participation of multiple catalytic sites, and a rotational catalysis mechanism. The studies led to a sharing of a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1997. He also served as the founding Director of UCLA's Molecular Biology Institute.
