Dr. Canfield combines (i) a broad interest in the states of matter that can emerge in metals from the interaction between their electronic, structural and magnetic degrees of freedom with (ii) his thirty year effort to expand and improve solution growth of new materials. By combining new materials design, discovery and synthesis with extensive sample characterization near the extremes of temperature, field and pressure, he has made key contributions to superconductivity in many materials, heavy Fermion and quantum critical systems, local moment magnetism, quasicrystals, topological semi-metals and crystal growth. He is an accomplished popularizer of these arenas of science.
