Patrick Olivelle

Patrick Olivelle’s work has re-shaped the understanding of ancient Indian philosophical, social, religious, and legal traditions.  His critical editions, translations, and interpretations of basic Indian texts have shown  how they evolved and challenged the largely colonial understanding of them.  The consequences of his work resonate in the realms of both classical Indian scholarship and modern South Asian social theory.  He has trained many of the leading scholars in the field.  The range and mastery of his work will provide the Academy with useful perspectives and guide us in charting the future of South Asian studies.
