Franklin P. and Caroline M. Johnson Professor of Engineering. Demonstrated that turbulent flow phenomena could be investigated scientifically via direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulation techniques. Discovery led to new understanding of morphology and dynamics of coherent structures in boundary layers. Worked on dynamic subgrid-scale turbulence models, which eliminated empiricism of earlier models and developed unified framework for applying optimal control theory to the Navier-Stokes equations. Introduced computational approach for describing aerodynamic sound. Founding Director of Center for Turbulence Research. Awarded the Fluid Dynamics Prize (1996) and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal (2002).
