Expert on teachers' professional preparation, with a focus on the teaching of English literature and writing. Her research has probed the role of academic knowledge on teachers' practice and the effects of alternative preparation pathways on instructional quality. She has conducted comparative studies of professional preparation across helping professions (clergy, clinical psychology, and teaching). Grossman developed a tool for appraising the quality of English teaching, Protocol for English Language Arts Teaching Observation (PLATO), which was used in the Measures of Effective Teaching project, and is now being studied as a resource for improving instructional effectiveness.
