In addition to his work as a law teacher and scholar, (1) from 1969-1976 served as general counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union, and from 1965 to the mid-seventies argued and briefed many cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and elsewhere, and from 1976-1991 served as national president of the ACLU; (2) Was actively involved in law school administration from 1989 to 200l while John Sexton was dean and, when Sexton became president of New York University he appointed Dorsen counselor to the president (which he does half-time) (3) Was editor of the ACLU handbook series (50 volumes) and is now editor of the International Journal of Constitutional Law; and (4) Served as founding president of the Society of American Law Teachers (1972-1974 and of the U.S. Association of Constitutional Law (1996-2003).
