Nicholas A. Peppas
Peppas is a pioneer in the study of polymeric networks and hydrogels with emphasis on their dynamics, thermodynamic behavior, molecular structure and applications. Peppas developed mathematical models/equations for the description of solute diffusion in equilibrium/dynamically swelling hydrogels with simultaneous diffusion/relaxation. Applications include pioneering work on protein and drug transport and release from polymer systems. Multidisciplinary approach in bionanotechnology and biomolecular engineering by blending molecular and cellular biology with engineering principles to generate next-generation systems, including bioMEMS with enhanced applicability, reliability, functionality, and longevity. Novel technologies of oral protein delivery, intelligent biomaterials, nanotechnology, bioadhesive biomaterials and molecular recognition.
