Biochemist Nenad Ban is a professor of Structural Molecular Biology at the ETH Zurich. He is a pioneer in studying gene expression mechanisms and the participating protein synthesis machinery in all kingdoms of life, both in terms of the chemistry of the process and with respect to molecular mechanisms of translation regulation, and of co-translational folding, processing and targeting to membranes. The Ban Lab investigates the structure and function of large cellular assemblies with a particular focus on complexes involved in protein synthesis using a combination of crystallographic, electron microscopic, and biochemical experiments.

He received a degree in molecular biology at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb and obtained a PhD at the University of California, Riverside in the laboratory of Alexander McPherson. He carried out his postdoctoral studies at Yale University in the laboratory of Thomas A. Steitz.
