Former President of South Africa. Statesman whose long imprisonment (1962–1990) and subsequent accession to the presidency where he served from 1994–1999, symbolizes the aspiration of South Africa’s black majority. The first President of South Africa to be elected in a fully representative democratic election, he led the transition towards multi-racial democracy in the country. Recipient of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
