Neil R. Powe
Neil R. Powe is the Constance B. Wofsy Distinguished Professor and Chief of the Medicine at the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, San Francisco’s flagship, safety net, public hospital. As a physician-scientist and health systems leader, he works at the intersection of medical innovation, resource allocation and health care equity. His work unites medicine and population health to transform research, education, medical care and health policy for some of the most vulnerable persons in society. Dr. Powe has trained scholars to translate research into relevant policy information and communicate with policymakers in helping them understand the evidence base of their decisions, His body of highly-cited work has influenced Medicare payment policies in kidney disease care; state policies on kidney disease care for undocumented immigrants; and the evidence-based elimination of race from kidney function estimating equations. A leader for health equity and social justice, he has a relentless commitment to elevate women and underrepresented persons as the next generation of academic leaders and change agents.
