Persily is a leading scholar and expert on American election law, public opinion and the courts, and communications. He is centrally concerned with how courts and legislatures navigate politically challenging questions. He has served as special master to the courts in drawing Congressional districts in New York, Connecticut, Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Maryland. He currently co-leads the Facebook initiative to open social media for academic research
