Research focuses on the various kinds of religious dynamic that are discernable as operative in much of the important secular poetry and fiction of the twentieth century. He has produced more than a dozen books and has edited ten others (The New Orpheus: Essays toward a Christian Poetic, Adversity and Grace: Studies in Recent American Literature, Reading George Steiner, etc.). His current work concerns visions of nature in modern poetry.
