Applies statistical techniques in the study of American politics, including urban politics and the politics of gender. Recent book, The Private Roots of Public Action: Gender, Equality, and Political Participation, cowinner of the APSA's Schuck Prize and numerous others, demonstrated the roots of the gender gap in political participation in the experiences of adult life. Coprincipal investigator of the American National Election Study. Received a Faculty Recognition Award from the University of Michigan. Has served as the president of the Midwest Political Science Association and and editorial board member of Political Analysis.
