Shattuck Professor of Pathological Anatomy, Emeritus, Harvard Medical School. Researched cardiovascular, renal, and leukocyte structure-functions. Established the endothelial nature of the blood-brain barrier, the structural bases for vascular and renal glomerular permeability, and the regulation of vascular smooth muscle migration and proliferation in injured arteries. Structure of gap junctions in both excitable and non-excitable tissues were defined. Proposed that lipids in cell membranes are organized in domains, pertubation of which has functional consequences. localized sites of reactive oxygen species production in activated leukocytes, including singlet oxygen. Current interests: vascular biology, education and ethics.
