For over forty years Haskell's writings, especially From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women in the Movies (1974, 1987 and 2016) remain points of reference in cinema and women's studies. Showing how gender in Hollywood cinema and current media shape policies cultural behavior, Haskell calls in question received ideas of sexual difference and policies imposing them. The Academy will welcome her role as scholar, artist and public intellectual: author of a memoir, a screenplay and a gripping account of her brother's sexual transformation in his elder years. Haskell's papers now comprise an archive in Harvard's Schlesinger Library.
