Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Lugano, Switzerland; Università della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano, Switzerland~Professor in Computational Science. Noted for contributions to our understanding of the structural and dynamical properties of solids, liquids, nanoscale materials, and biological systems. Contributions changed the course of computational molecular science, thereby broadening its impact. His algorithms and simulation methodologies continue to influence the future trajectory of this discipline. Early article with Roberto Car, involving the marriage of electronic structure calculations and classical molecular dynamics, had broad, fundamental, and lasting influence, as shown by its many citations and the number of researchers who subsequently reevaluated their research directions in its wake. Work brought the field through a psychological barrier and established the understanding that electronic structure and dynamics could be linked. Work has led to hundreds of applications across the breadth of chemistry. Portfolio of publications has received 33,000 citations and carries a Hirsch index value around 90.~
