Research focuses on the earliest history of the Universe and the deep connections between elementary particle physics and cosmology. He was one of the first to recognize and exploit the connections between particle physics and cosmology. He has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of inflationary cosmology, the origin of structure in the Universe, and dark matter. His current research deals with the mysterious dark energy that is causing the expansion of the Universe to speed up.
