Was the first to undertake large-scale functional genomics projects, making important contributions to the development of proteome chips, high resolution human gene tiling arrays, global mapping of binding sites for regulatory proteins, high throughput DNA sequencing technologies, and RNA-Seq for global analysis of gene expression. He led in applying human genetic information in personalizing the diagnosis and treatment of human disease. He was chosen to lead major professional societies and editorial boards in his field and to chair academic departments at Yale and Stanford.
