Author of eleven books on comparative historical sociology. His four-volume Sources of Social Power (1986, 1993, 2012, 2013) provides a global comparative analysis of long-term social changes in structures of state, social classes, military power, and social ideologies from the ancient world to the present. The historical scope and analytical theorizing of the four volumes is the leading example of advances in recent decades in comparative historical sociology. The Dark Side of Democracy: Explaining Ethnic Cleansing (2005) won the American Sociological Association's Barrington Moore Award in 2006.
