Chemical engineer Michael Doherty, the Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp Chair in Process Systems Engineering at UC Santa Barbara, is a teacher and scholar who maintains close ties to industrial research and development.

Doherty's career has been informed his both academic pursuits and the societal needs. His research is focused on separation system science & engineering, with special interest in crystal growth and crystal engineering. To Doherty, the theory is quite abstract but the applications are important and widespread, including carbon dioxide capture and mineralization, improved solid-dose pharmaceutical products, and development of better catalyst particles. He holds six patents.

He received his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College, London and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Trinity College, University of Cambridge.
