Michael E. Stone

Stone has made exceptional contributions to two related but distinct fields. (1) Through his own scholarship (text editions and interpretive works) and the development of institutions for scholarship, he helped re-establish research into Second Temple Jewish non-canonical writings, a field that had languished since the beginning of the twentieth century. (2) He became a leading scholar in the field of ancient and Medieval Armenian literature and religious culture, making signal contributions in linguistics, philology, and religious practices. He recovered, edited, and studied Jewish texts extant only in Armenian translation and Armenian Christian apocryphal literature.
