Mathematical physicist. His works have focused on disorder effects on the spectra of quantum operators, phase transitions and critical phenomena in statistical mechanics, and the structure of related random fields. For fundamental contributions in these areas he received the Dannie Heineman Prize (APS-AIP), Brouwer Medal (Dutch Math. Soc. and Dutch Acad.
