Research focuses on the psychodynamic understanding of social relations, society, and culture. He has written about religion and social structure in a Micronesian atoll (Ifaluk); society, socialization, and personality in a kibbutz; Buddhism, folk religion, and kinship in Burma. Present research interests include utopian theory and utopian societies, theories of unconscious psychological processes, especially defense mechanism, and cultural and pscyhological universals.
