Maurice Kleman is a widely known theoretician of the physics of singularities in condensed matter. In this difficult discipline, which requires both a great ability for abstract and geometrical thinking and working in close collaboration with experimentalists, he is credited with the topological classification of defects and the concept of geometrical frustration. These ideas continue to inspire research in many different domains: macroscopic magnetism, amorphous media, quasicrystals and liquid crystals. Kleman's present research deals with singularities in cosmology and heliophysics.
