His research concerns mechanisms of genetic recombination and the proteins involved in them. Current work focuses on the DNA rearrangement in the immune system that assembles functional antibody and T-cell receptor genes from their initial gene segments. This so-called V(D)J recombination is responsible for much of the diversity of the immune response, enabling it to combat a wide range of infectious agents.
