His speciality is the Russian economy. His most recent work examines the post-Soviet economic reforms, specifically the privatization process and the abuses that have resulted from the failure to appreciate the uniqueness of the Russian economy. He focuses particularly on the oligarchs, the theft of state resources, corruption, money laundering, and the Mafiya. His earlier works include the first study of the Soviet Union's environmental problems, as well as predictions of the impending collapse of the Soviet economy, and Gorbachev's and Yeltsin's failure to revive it.
