Characterized the molecular basis for the link between transcription and gene rearrangement during B cell development and the role of V(D)J recombination in the origin of lymphoid malignancies. He used lymphoid cells frozen at different stages of development derived from gene targeted mice to determine the critical receptors, protein factors and DNA sequences involved in the regulation of B and T cell development. He served as dean of biological sciences at UC Berkeley from 2008-2011, Provost of Brown University from 2011-2014, and from July 2014 until January 2022 as president of the University of Michigan.
