Lemley is a productive, highly cited, and influential intellectual property scholar. His scholarly work has drawn upon economic theory to analyze and recommend adjustments to patent and copyright law to promote innovation and competition and advance technology fields. His work is theoretically significant and practical in addressing key challenges of the day (e.g. patent troll and functional claiming problems). His empirical studies generated considerable follow-on empirical work by other scholars. He has actively litigated major high technology cases, and written dozen of amicus curiae briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court, among others.
