Johnson is a developmental cognitive neuroscientist whose research focuses on the study of functional brain organization during early human development. His work has revealed how specialized cognitive functions emerge within particular brain regions, with an emphasis on infants' and children's understanding of the social world. His methods include eye-tracking, EEG, fNIRS, and fMRI to study face perception, cueing by eye-gaze, and interpretation of human action in typically and atypically developing children (with a focus on siblings of Autism). His "interactive specialization" framework for human social brain development highlights the role of regional networks including the prefrontal cortex.
